Cultural Appropriation in Music - Race Relations
Cultural Appropriation in Music - Race Relations Cultural appropriation is nothing new. For years prominent whites have been accused of borrowing the fashions, music, and art forms of various cultural groups and popularizing them as their own. The music industry has been particularly hard hit by this practice. The 1991 film ââ¬Å"The Five Heartbeats,â⬠for example, which was based on the experiences of real African-American bands, depicts how music executives took the works of black musicians and repackaged them as the product of white artists. Due to cultural appropriation, Elvis Presley is widely regarded as being the ââ¬Å"King of Rock and Roll,â⬠despite the fact that his music was heavily influenced by black artists who never received credit for their contributions to the art form. In the early 1990s, white rapper Vanilla Ice topped the Billboard music charts when rappers as a whole remained on the fringes of popular culture. This piece explores how musicians with wide appeal today, such as Madonna, Gwen Stefani, M iley Cyrus, and Kreayshawn have been accused of cultural appropriation, borrowing heavily from black, Native American, and Asian traditions. Madonna The Italian-American superstar has been accused of borrowing from a host of cultures to sell her music, including gay culture, black culture, Indian culture, and Latin American cultures. Madonna may be the biggest culture vulture yet. In ââ¬Å"Madonna: A Critical Analysis,â⬠author JBNYC points out how the pop star wore Indian saris, bindis, and clothing during a 1998 photo shoot for Rolling Stone magazine and the following year participated in a geisha-inspired photo spread for Harperââ¬â¢s Bazaar magazine. Prior to this, Madonna borrowed from Latin American culture for her 1986 video ââ¬Å"La Isla Bonitaâ⬠andà from gay, black, and Latino culture for her 1990 video ââ¬Å"Vogue.â⬠ââ¬Å"Although one can argue that by taking on the personas of otherwise underrepresented cultures and giving them exposure to the masses, she is doing to world cultures like India, Japan, and Latin America, what she has done for feminism and gay culture,â⬠JBNYC writes. ââ¬Å"However, she made political statements about feminism, female sexuality, and homosexuality about their ideological representations in the media. In the case of her Indian, Japanese, and Latino looks, she has made no political or cultural statements. Her use of these cultural artifacts is superficial and the consequence is great. She has further perpetuated the narrow and stereotypical representations of minorities in the media.â⬠Gwen Stefani Singer Gwen Stefani faced criticism in 2005 and 2006 for appearing with a silent group of Asian-American women who accompanied her to promotional appearances and other events. Stefani called the women ââ¬Å"Harajuku Girlsâ⬠after the women she encountered in the Harajuku district of Tokyo. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stefani called the ââ¬Å"Harajuku Girlsâ⬠an art project and said, ââ¬Å"The truth is that I basically was saying how great that culture is.â⬠Actress and comedienne Margaret Cho felt differently, calling the foursome a ââ¬Å"minstrel show.â⬠Salon writer Mihi Ahn agreed, criticizing Gwen Stefani for her cultural appropriation of Harajuku culture. Ahn wrote in 2005: ââ¬Å"Stefani fawns over Harajuku style in her lyrics, but her appropriation of this subculture makes about as much sense as the Gap selling Anarchy T-shirts; sheââ¬â¢s swallowed a subversive youth culture in Japan and barfed up another image of submissive giggling Asian women. While aping a style thatââ¬â¢s supposed to be about individuality and personal expression, Stefani ends up being the only one who stands out.â⬠In 2012, Stefani and her band No Doubt would face a backlash for their stereotypical cowboys and Indians video for their single ââ¬Å"Looking Hot.â⬠In the late 1990s, Stefani also routinely sported a bindi, a symbol Indian women wear, in her appearances with No Doubt. Kreayshawn When rapper Kreayshawnââ¬â¢s single ââ¬Å"Gucci, Gucciâ⬠begin to earn buzz in 2011, a number of critics accused her of cultural appropriation. They argued Kreayshawn and her crew, known as the ââ¬Å"White Girl Mob,â⬠were acting out black stereotypes. Bene Viera, a writer for Clutch magazine, wrote off Kreayshawn as a rapper in 2011, in part, because of doubts about whether a Berkley Film School dropout could find her niche in hip-hop. In addition, Viera argued that Kreayshawn has mediocre skills as an MC. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s ironic how the white girl mimicking black culture has been viewed as quirky, cute, and interesting in the past,â⬠Viera noted. ââ¬Å"But sisters who fashionably rock bamboo earrings, gold nameplate necklaces, and blonde streaked weaves, will inevitably be considered ââ¬Ëghettoââ¬â¢ by society. Itââ¬â¢s equally problematic that every female emcee post Queen Latifah and MC Lyte who has had massive mainstream success all had to sell sex. Kreayshawn, on the other hand, is able to avoid an over-sexualized image because of her whiteness.â⬠Miley Cyrus Former child star Miley Cyrus is best known for her starring role in the Disney Channel program ââ¬Å"Hannah Montana,â⬠which also featured her country music star father Billy Ray Cyrus. As a young adult, the younger Cyrus has taken pains to shed her ââ¬Å"child starâ⬠image. In June 2013, Miley Cyrus released a new single, ââ¬Å"We Canââ¬â¢t Stop.â⬠During that time Cyrus earned press about the songââ¬â¢s allusions to drug use and made headlines after debuting a markedly ââ¬Å"urbanâ⬠appearance and performing with rapper Juicy J on stage in Los Angeles. The public was shocked to see Miley Cyrus sport a grill with gold teeth and twerk (or booty pop) at the House of Blues with Juicy J. But Cyrusââ¬â¢ image overhaul was a decidedly concerted move, with her music producers commenting that she wanted her new songs to ââ¬Å"feel black.â⬠Before long, Cyrus faced a wave of criticism from African Americans concerned that she was using black culture to advance her career, which many before her had done. Dodai Stewart of Jezebel.com asserts of Cyrus: ââ¬Å"Miley seems to delight in â⬠¦twerking, popping the $$, bending at the waist and shaking her rump in the air. Fun. But basically, she, as a rich white woman, is ââ¬Ëplayingââ¬â¢ at being a minority specifically from a lower socio-economic level. Along with the gold grill and some hand gestures, Miley straight-up appropriates the accoutrements associated with certain black people on the fringes of society.ââ¬

Fate Versus Free Will Essay example -- essays papers
Fate Versus Free Will Fate, as described in the Oxford English Dictionary, is ââ¬Å"The principle, power, or agency by which, according to certain philosophical and popular systems of belief, all events, or some events in particular, are unalterably predetermined from eternity.â⬠To the western world, fate is perceived as ââ¬Å"a sentence or doom of the godsâ⬠(Oxford). They often sought prophecies of the gods, especially from Apollo, the god of knowledge. The Greeks would seek prophecies usually when they had doubts about something, or if they were afraid or in despair. When the gods made a prophecy, the Greeks put all their faith in it and believed that it would happen. When their prophecies did come true, was it really fate that controlled them? If so, was there any room for free will? Some have difficulty believing that a god, rather than their own actions, could control their fate. However, when a god made a prophecy, which later came true, the evidence was clear enough to cause someone to believe in fate. In one famous play, the question of fate versus free will plays a dominant role during analysis. The play, Sophoclesââ¬â¢ Oedipus Rex, stars a young man, Oedipus, who appears to be the pawn of the gods. In Ode four (27-31), the chorus comments on Oedipusââ¬â¢ state: And now of all men ever known Most pitiful is this manââ¬â¢s story: His fortunes are most changed, his state Fallen to a low slaveââ¬â¢s Ground under bitter fate. Every aspect of Oedipusââ¬â¢ life and everyone he loves eventually suffers from a horrible fate predicted by the gods. However, did Oedipus have to suffer his fate or did he have the power to change it; is the outcome of Oedipusââ¬â¢s life really the result of fate or his own actions? After... ... 1992. How to Win Friends and Influence People Essay
An Essay on Dale Carnegieââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"How to Win Friends and Influence Peopleâ⬠Dale Carnegieââ¬â¢s book entitled How to Win Friends and Influence People explores various ways on how to communicate efficiently and professionally. Each chapter speaks about different scenarios encountered by the author as well as helpful guidelines on how to handle them. In this book, Carnegie focuses on the significance of having good communication skills. He applies ethics, skills, and behaviour as well as human relations to his ideas and principles. As a reader, I find this book, highly beneficial in enhancing oneââ¬â¢s professionalism. It can likewise help readers learn how to cope up with the challenges in the corporate and business field particularly the ones that involve human relations. I specifically want to emphasize on these 10 areas; 1. Learn how to establish a good first impression. This is probably the most challenging part of entering any professional field. Earning the respect of others is not an easy task. However, it is not impossible to make people like you either. Applying sufficient knowledge in the field, understanding the market, willingness to explore various areas, creativity and resourcefulness all contribute to a good first impression. 2. Find a way to make people interested. One of the reasons behind the success of some businessmen and other professionals is that they know how to get the attention of others. This is a critical aspect for every businessman because it is necessary to make a mark in the field in order to be known. For instance, it is not enough for me to have a business going. I should know how to get the attention of my target customers and to keep them interested. In a business environment, it is not enough for me to have exceptional or unique ideas. I should learn how to communicate and implement them in an appropriate manner in order to generate interest from others. 3. Know how to handle criticisms. Handling criticisms can be very difficult. It can create a negative impact and can challenge oneââ¬â¢s confidence. However, knowing how to handle criticisms very well can contribute to self improvement and better performance. In business scenarios, customers tend to criticize the products and services they get from companies. Successful businessmen should learn how to take criticisms and consider them as learning in order to create avenues for improvement. 4. Establish good relationship with employees. This book had made me realize that I can become a more successful businessman by establishing harmonious relationship with the people who work for me without necessarily crossing the boundaries of professionalism. Saying kind words and expressing appreciation can work wonders in establishing loyalty and work enthusiasm among employees. . Conquer fears. To become a successful professional or businessman, willingness to take risks is important otherwise, it would be impossible to move forward. I, for instance, should learn how to challenge myself and my capabilities in order to achieve more. Knowing how to make calculated risks can determine opportunities in order to make a business grow. 6. Develop confidence. This principle by Carnegie challenged me to believe in the things that I am capable of. This can be initiated by taking a few brave steps in order to become better. Self confidence comes from believing that all things are possible if they would be explored and given the chance. 7. Acknowledge own mistakes. It is not easy to admit being wrong. However, finding lessons in my mistakes and allowing my self to learn from others can work wonders in my career in the field of business. It is all about learning from mistakes and avoiding them in the future. 8. Explore other opportunities. Making a business work requires intensive market research, thorough understanding of trends and knowing exactly what customers need. There are many opportunities that can make a business grow and the best way to start is by developing a relationship with target customers. Knowing my customers and making their suggestions count can help me in finding feasible opportunities for my business. 9. Work on communication skills. Making the right choice of words can minimize conflicts and can lead to better resolution of problems. An ideal businessman always treats his people, clients and customers with respect by communicating professionally and by not uttering hurtful or inappropriate words. 0. Consider learning as an active process. Do not just read but rather apply the principles. Constantly applying what I have learned from this book in every opportunity that arises will allow me to master the skills. These are just some of the areas wherein I can apply the principles and rules that Carnegie has stated in his book How to Win Friends and Influence People. Learning how to apply them in different business scenarios can spell success in earning friends in the industry and in inspiring other people as well.
